Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced Friday that the Department of Justice indicted nine Iranians for a massive hacking operation against American institutions.

“A federal grand jury in the southern district of New York indicted nine Iranians for conspiring to hack into computers and to defraud American and foreign universities, businesses, and government agencies,” Rosenstein said.

The deputy attorney general said that the indicted worked for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a zealous paramilitary organization in Iran.

“They hacked the computer systems of approximately 320 universities in 22 countries,” he said, citing $3.4 billion in stolen research.

Rosenstein said that the IRGC used the stolen data for itself or sold it for profit inside Iran.
