DOJ Investigating Comey Memo Leak

The Justice Department Office of the Inspector General launched an investigation into the leak of former FBI Director James Comey’s memos, according to a Friday report of The Wall Street Journal.

Comey provided the memos to a friend after his firing in 2017, and the friend then gave the information in the documents to the media. The fallout from the memo contents embarrassed President Trump and may have contributed to the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

But a new review from the inspector general found that two of the memos contained classified information, according to the WSJ:

Of those two memos, Mr. Comey himself redacted elements of one that he knew to be classified to protect secrets before he handed the documents over to his friend. He determined at the time that another memo contained no classified information, but after he left the Federal Bureau of Investigation, bureau officials upgraded it to “confidential,” the lowest level of classification.

The Justice Department inspector general is now conducting an investigation into classification issues related to the Comey memos, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Comey is defending his release of the memos, claiming they are personal documents. But the Justice Department doesn’t see it that way.

President Trump has repeatedly accused the former FBI director of leaking classified information, even calling for jail-time.

And just yesterday, the DOJ inspector general referred another Trump foe, former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, for criminal charges to the U.S. Attorney of D.C.
