Don’t Laugh: This Democrat Has-Been is Eyeing a White House Run

It would be one of the most unlikely candidacies in modern political history, but in the era of Trump, never say never.

Don’t Laugh: This Democrat Has-Been is Eyeing a White House Run

Failed presidential candidates have a way of lingering in the public eye beyond their expiration date. Exhibit A of this phenomenon is Hillary Clinton, who spent most of 2017 blaming anyone and everyone (DNC, Putin, James Comey, the list goes on) for her stunning 2016 loss to Donald Trump.

But another “also ran” from the mid-2000s is reportedly considering another run at the White House: John Kerry.

The former senator and secretary of state (does that résumé sound familiar?) reportedly told Palestinian officials on Wednesday that he is considering another presidential campaign, to challenge Trump in 2020.

Kerry hinted that many in the American establishment, as well as in American intelligence, are dissatisfied with Trump’s performance and the way he leads their country.

He surprised his interlocutor by saying he was seriously considering running for president in 2020. When asked about his advanced age, he said he was not much older than Trump and would not have an age problem.

Kerry, 74, met with a close associate of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in London. In addition to revealing his potential political ambitions, Kerry harshly criticized Trump to Hussein Agha, one of Abbas’s top officials, and claimed Trump may not serve out his first term:

During the conversation, according to the report, Kerry asked Agha to convey a message to Abbas and ask him to “hold on and be strong.” Tell him, he told Agha, “that he should stay strong in his spirit and play for time, that he will not break and will not yield to President [Donald] Trump’s demands.”

According to Kerry, Trump will not remain in office for a long time. It was reported that Kerry said that within a year there was a good chance that Trump would not be in the White House.

At a minimum, it’s wildly inappropriate for a former secretary of state to be telling foreign leaders unsubstantiated claims about the tenure of the president of the United States. To do so in conjunction with a milquetoast announcement about Kerry’s own presidential ambitions is pathetic.
