Editorial Board: Nancy Pelosi is Holding Back the Democratic Party

While House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) consolidates power in Washington, D.C., at least one editorial board of a major U.S. newspaper is encouraging Democrats to look for new leadership following the 2018 midterm elections.

The Kansas City Star editorial board wrote Wednesday that Pelosi is “an albatross around the neck of the Democratic Party,” particularly in a time when “ongoing frustration with Congress has voters placing an outsized premium on fresh faces.” They point to the recent election of Rep.-elect Sharice Davids (D-KS) and Sen.-elect Josh Hawley (R-MO) as evidence of the desire among voters for “fresh faces.”

Still, they note, Pelosi doesn’t believe that sentiment applies to her.

“Pelosi is convinced that she’s the exception to this rule, but the grim truth is she’s holding back her party,” the editorial board wrote.

She brands her party as California, big-government liberalism at a time when Democrats are more nuanced than that. Yes, some of the onslaught of criticism can be attributed to sexism. Still, Pelosi’s been around a long time, and Democrats and the country would be well-served by a new approach and fresh thinking.

We hope our Democratic representatives recognize as much.

But Pelosi, who has said she is “100 percent” confident she will be reelected speaker, is showing no signs of backing down. In fact, Pelosi just racked up two more endorsements from House Democrats who had previously opposed her leadership. Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH) and Brian Higgins (D-NY) announced earlier this week that they now support Pelosi.
