Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-MA) campaign is already desperately in need of a big shake-up if it intends to compete with the other 2020 Democratic presidential contenders next year.

That change will need to come in the form of paring back expenditures on a bloated staff or raising significantly more money than it did in the first three months of the year.

According to her quarterly FEC filings, Warren raised $6 million in Q1 of 2019. She spent $5.2 million during that same period, $1.9 million of which went to hire and retain more than 160 employees.

Thanks to a war chest of campaign contributions from her Senate account, Warren was able to stay afloat thanks to a $10.4 million transfer to her presidential account. But that’s a one-time fix for what appears to be a systemic problem.

In short, Warren’s campaign spent 87 cents of every dollar it brought in, an unsustainable burn rate.

Warren’s 160 staffers is about double the number hired by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who raised about three times as much as Warren in Q1.

Time will tell if Warren’s gamble pays off, but polling indicates she has a lot of ground to make up between now and the start of the 2020 primary season.
