A liberal environmental group with a national presence is spending big in the Colorado governor’s race, the Colorado Independent reported on Wednesday.

Sierra Club wrote of the campaign for Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO):

The campaign, which begins today and will run through Colorado’s primary Election Day on June 26, will inform Colorado voters about Jared’s bold leadership and his support for 100% clean, renewable energy. The campaign kicks off at www.ColoradoforPolis.com and with a television spot entitled “Bold.”

Though the Sierra Club does not appear to rate members of Congress based on their votes, another environmental group, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV), does. LCV gives Polis a 92-percent lifetime score.

Polis will certainly welcome the help in an expensive race. But it may open him up to charges of being allied with D.C. liberals. The Sierra Club has been described as a “left-leaning organization” that supports Democratic candidates.

Only days after President Trump was inaugurated. the director of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign, Mary Anne Hitt, wrote about how group intended to block Trump’s agenda:

“We can block the Trump agenda — make no mistake about it. Most of the big changes Trump wants have to go through the US Congress, which is where all those Senate Democrats come in. If they stay strong and united, many of Trump’s bad ideas will be dead in the water. That’s why we have to keep turning out to rallies, going to events with our elected officials, meeting with them and their staff, calling and writing and posting on their social media pages, and making sure they hear the voice of the people.”

Polis may have a difficult time explaining his allyship with such a true-blue group in a purple state like Colorado.
