Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder called for the electoral college to be abolished, saying it’s “a defect in our democracy” during an event with former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on gerrymandering at the National Press Club on Tuesday,

The moderator of the event asked Holder what he thought about eliminating the electoral college and replacing it with a national popular vote.

“I think we ought to do away with the electoral college. You know we have a system now that’s a defect in our democracy,” Holder said. “We have had in the last five elections two presidents who were not – did not win the popular vote. The presidency is the one office in this country that represents all of the people.”

“It seems to me that we ought to have a direct election of the president of the United States. If we did that, you would have Republicans who would be campaigning in California, the Republican would campaign in New York. [The] Democrat would campaign in Texas,” Holder said. “Now it means that some swing states, smaller states, would not get as much attention as they do now. But I think that the vast majority of people in this country would get a great deal more attention.”
