Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced Monday that he is not seeking the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, ending months of speculation.

Instead, Holder will continue to focus on his work at the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), a project he helped launch in 2015 that focuses on helping Democrats win back state house seats ahead of the 2020 census and redistricting, which will take place in states across the country.

In an op-ed in The Washington Post, Holder wrote that he will approach 2020 with the knowledge that congressional redistricting is set to take place the next year, though he said Democrats’ “primary objective” should be “making sure a Democratic president is sworn in on Jan. 20, 2021.”

“What happens in those races over the next two years will shape the next decade of our politics,” he wrote. “Our fight to end gerrymandering is about electing leaders who actually work for the interests of the people they are supposed to represent. I will do everything I can to ensure that the next Democratic president is not hobbled by a House of Representatives pulled to the extremes by members from gerrymandered districts.”

Holder joins former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D-MA) and liberal megadonor Tom Steyer in deciding not to join the crowded field of 2020 Democrats. Two governors, Jay Inslee (D-WA) and John Hickenlooper (D-CO), just added their names to the growing list of candidates.

Last summer, Holder indicated he may have spoken to former President Barack Obama about his ambition to run for president. “Let’s just say that my conversations with the President are my conversations with the President,” he said. “We have talked.”
