"Nike has essentially hijacked this issue. They have now made themselves, instead of Colin Kaepernick, the face of all this."

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said that Nike is now the face of the NFL’s national anthem protest by making former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick one of the faces of Nike’s 30th anniversary “Just Do It” campaign and suggested Tuesday it was for monetary reasons.

ESPN’s Molly Qerim asked Smith what impact Nike signing Kaepernick would have on the Nike brand.

“Unfortunately, I think it will help the Nike brand,” Smith said. “The reason why I use the word unfortunate is because I don’t know if anybody has gotten this, [but] Nike has essentially hijacked this issue. They have now made themselves, instead of Colin Kaepernick, the face of all this.”

Smith then suggested that Nike made the deal with Kaepernick because “black folks are included in that group that buy footwear,” and that Nike is capitalizing from it.
