Fact Checker Blasts Kamala Harris for Trying to ‘Rewrite History’

Politifact handed out a “False” rating on Thursday to 2020 presidential candidate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), for her claim that handing over arrested undocumented children to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents “was an unintended consequence” of a policy that she supported in 2008.

In 2008, when Harris was San Francisco’s district attorney, she supported a policy “that reported undocumented youth to federal immigration officials upon their arrest by local police.”

Making matters worse for Harris is that the policy also did not consider whether the children we were actually found guilty of a crime

During a recent event in Iowa, Harris said that handing these children over to ICE agents was “an unintended consequence” of the policy.

However, according to Politifact, that “in fact, was the very purpose of the policy.”

According to Politifact:

It was specifically designed by then San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to allow local police to report arrested undocumented youth to ICE, according to news reports and those who opposed the policy. Previously, the city had only made ICE referrals after convictions.

“Turning over young people and children who were accused of a crime that later turned out they did not commit was not an unintended consequence of what was going on. It was precisely what was going on and what we were trying to avoid,” former San Francisco County Supervisor David Campos told Politifact.

“You can’t rewrite history,” Campos added.

For this reason, as well as other mischaracterizations in her answer, Politifact rated Harris’ claim as “False.”
