FALSE: Fact-Checker Blasts Ilhan Omar’s Claim About Pay at McDonald’s

Freshman congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is in hot water this week after she posted clearly anti-Semitic stereotypes on Twitter Sunday night, prompting Republicans and Democrats alike to demand she apologize. By mid-afternoon, Omar offered up what many called a non-apology.

Tuesday brought a new set of problems for Omar, however, as the Washington Post blasted a claim she made about the pay earned by McDonald’s workers. Here’s what Omar said last week during a congressional hearing to a McDonald’s employee from Independence, Missouri:

“The median pay for a McDonald’s worker was $7,000 in 2017. And that is the pay gap between the CEO that’s making 21.8 [million] to the 7,000 [dollars] that a worker who has put in 40 hours [a week] gets paid. To me, that just morally does not sit well.”

The only problem? That worker said he made $11 per hour, which would result in a $22,880 annual salary. So where did Omar get her numbers? Probably the last place you’d expect: Poland.

It turns out, Omar took her numbers from a required disclosure about the company’s “pay ratio,” but she and her staff did not account for the fact that McDonald’s is a global company operating in dozens of countries. In 2017, the median compensation for a part-time employee in Poland was about $7,017. That’s the figure Omar used in her congressional hearing.

In reality, the median pay for a McDonald’s worker is much closer to $20,800 per year, according to the Washington Post fact check team.

“The $7,000 figure is for a part-time worker in Poland, not a full-time worker in the United States as she suggested,” Glenn Kessler wrote.

Omar earned two Pinocchios for her false claim.
