Nigel Farage, one of President Trump’s biggest supporters in the United Kingdom, urged Republicans and the president to consider comprehensive background checks for gun purchases, but added that his home country’s laws had “gone a bit too far.”

“I think the argument for background checks is logical, common sense,” Farage told reporters at CPAC on Thursday.

He added that increased thoroughness in vetting potential gun owners could help prevent school shootings, and praised the president’s idea to increase security at schools.

The Brexit leader doubted that laws as stringent as the United Kingdom’s would be effective in America, pointing out that millions of weapons were already in circulation.

“The gun laws in our country have stopped even sporting shooters who compete in the Olympics from being able to practice,” Farage said. “So I think our gun laws maybe have gone a bit too far.”
