FBI, DHS Refute Bill Nelson’s Election Security Claim

A joint letter from the FBI and Department of Homeland Security to the south Florida-based Sun Sentinel refuted Sen. Bill Nelson’s (D-FL) baseless claims that Russians had hacked the electoral system of his home state.

Nelson previously received a “Four Pinocchios” rating from The Washington Post over his claim, for which he did not provide evidence.

Now the federal government is officially denying his claims:

“Although we have not seen new or ongoing compromises of state or local election infrastructure in Florida, Russian government actors have previously demonstrated both the intent and capability to conduct malicious cyber operations,” they wrote. “DHS and the FBI will continue to notify any victim of a successful cyber intrusion into their election network in any jurisdiction nationwide.”

Russians have attempted to penetrate elections systems, especially during the 2016 election. But the FBI and DHS rebutted Nelson’s claim that Russian hackers have actually infiltrated computer systems.

The Democrat previously asserted that classified information backed up his statements.
