FBI’s Kavanaugh Investigation Could Wrap Up on Wednesday

If the reported timeline is true, it would give Mitch McConnell plenty of time to schedule a floor vote later this week.

FBI’s Kavanaugh Investigation Could Wrap Up on Wednesday

The FBI’s supplemental investigation into allegations made against Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, could wrap up as early as Wednesday, according to reports.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, called for a one-week delay on a full Senate floor vote on Kavanaugh, to give the FBI time to investigate sexual assault allegations made by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. Those allegations became public after the FBI’s previous background check into Kavanaugh, and Ford and Kavanaugh testified last week before the committee. Kavanaugh denies the allegations.

The primary focus of the investigation has been the sexual assault claim of Christine Blasey Ford, who says she was attacked by Kavanaugh while both were in high school 36 years ago. Ford, however, acknowledged difficulty in remembering details of the episode, including where and when it happened.

The FBI was given a week to conduct its probe. NBC News, citing two sources the media outlet said were familiar with the investigation, said the FBI had hoped to complete its work as soon as Tuesday night. The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times also reported that the FBI was on pace to complete its effort ahead of schedule.

Senate Democrats repeatedly demanded the FBI investigate Ford’s claims, but it wasn’t until Flake agreed that the White House ordered the bureau to look into the matter. Five senators still have not publicly stated how they will vote on Kavanaugh, including Flake. Republicans can afford to have no more than three of those senators oppose Kavanaugh, or his nomination will fail.

McConnell has been steadfast that the Senate will take up a vote on Kavanaugh’s confirmation this week, and the timing of the FBI report appears to be in line with that schedule.
