Federal Judge to Mueller: You’re Just Fishing for Trump’s Impeachment

At a court hearing on Friday, federal Judge T.S. Ellis accused Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of ulterior motives in the prosecution of former Trump campaign manager, Paul Manafort.

A Reagan appointee, Ellis “expressed deep skepticism” that bank fraud charges against Manafort were motivated by a desire to seek justice, according to CNN’s Katelyn Polantz and Jessica Schneider.

Instead, the judge accused the Mueller investigation of seeking one thing – the impeachment of President Trump:

“You don’t really care about Mr. Manafort’s bank fraud,” District Judge T.S. Ellis said to prosecutor Michael Dreeben, at times losing his temper. Ellis said prosecutors were interested in Manafort because of his potential to provide material that would lead to Trump’s “prosecution or impeachment,” Ellis said.

“That’s what you’re really interested in,” said Ellis, who was appointed by President Ronald Reagan.

Ellis reportedly “repeated his suspicion several times” throughout the hearing. He also questioned the referral of information to the New York U.S. Attorney regarding Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen.

The judge’s comments could signal trouble for the Russia investigation, which has swirled around Manafort’s alleged connections to the Kremlin.

With at least one member of the judiciary against them, the Mueller team would face an uphill battle in proving any potential misdeeds by the Trump team.
