Sen. Bernie Sanders (i-VT) is slated to give a speech in defense of socialism on Wednesday. The title, “How Democratic Socialism Is the Only Way to Defeat Oligarchy and Authoritarianism,” is making some of his fellow 2020 rivals laugh, however.

While most candidates are trying to find ways to appeal to voters, Sanders is content to simply be himself and talk about the issues that matter to him, even if they don’t matter to voters.

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) questioned whether voters even knew what some of these ideologies are. Bennet was among those who laughed at Sanders’ speech title:

Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado let out an exasperated chuckle. “I don’t think the American people even know what that means,” he told me. “Nobody in my town halls talks about democratic socialism versus oligarchy and authoritarianism.”

According to The Atlantic’s Edward-Isaac Dovere, making Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) laugh is no simple task. Sanders’ speech title did the trick:

Making Elizabeth Warren laugh can be tricky. Throwing her off her talking points is almost impossible. Both happened when she heard that her 2020 opponent Bernie Sanders is scheduled to deliver a “major address” today entitled, according to his campaign, “How Democratic Socialism Is the Only Way to Defeat Oligarchy and Authoritarianism.”

The Massachusetts senator shook her head.

And former Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO), who famously told a group of California Democrats that socialism is not the answer, also “laughed at the title of Sanders’s speech when I read it to him,” Dovere wrote.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) let out a simple “Huh.”

Some Democrats are perplexed by Sanders’ decision to go all in on socialism at this stage in the primary, but those who know him best say they’re not surprised. “He wants this fight. He believes that he’s more right than most insiders are ready to acknowledge, based on his own successes and based on how he’s defined so much of the larger Democratic agenda these past four years—not to mention all the polls that show support among young people for socialism,” Dovere wrote.

The other person who’s likely pleased with Bernie’s decision is President Donald Trump. He’s made no bones about the fact that he believes Sanders’ socialism is taking over the Democratic Party and has no place in American politics. This speech will only give Trump another data point to use against Sanders and the Democrats as their primary process unfolds.
