Fightin’ Words: Biden Says Fixing America’s Problems ‘Doesn’t Require Socialism’

During a fundraising event in Chicago on Wednesday, former Vice President Joe Biden took a shot at the preferred economic system of his chief rival Bernie Sanders: socialism.

Biden’s remarks focused on rebuilding the middle class, arguing those people need “just a little bit of breathing room.”

That’s when Biden went after socialism:

“Things have changed in a way that needs to be turned around,” he said, according to a pool report of the event. “And it doesn’t require socialism, and it doesn’t require some fundamental shift. It requires sort of reordering capitalism to make capitalism work and save it.”

The remarks were no accident – Biden went after socialism the same day that Sanders gave a full-throated defense of socialism titled, “How Democratic Socialism Is the Only Way to Defeat Oligarchy and Authoritarianism.”

Socialism has received outsize attention in the 2020 presidential race so far. President Trump has elevated the issue by routinely criticizing the economic system. Sanders’ fellow 2020 contenders have all been asked about socialism at one point or another.

Despite the U.S.’s longstanding foundation of capitalism, few Democrats have criticized the socialist model. One who did, former Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO), was roundly booed by a crowd of liberal Democrats in California earlier this month.

A recent poll found that a majority of women aged 18 to 54 said they would prefer to live in a socialist country rather than a capitalist one.
