The nation’s largest firefighters union endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign Monday, just days after he formally launched his candidacy. The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) union announced the endorsement with the release of a five-minute video.

IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger praised Biden effusively in the video and highlighted the union’s top priorities.

“Joe’s been there when our members needed him on Capitol Hill, throughout his Senate career and as vice president of the United States,” Schaitberger said. “And he will continue to be there as we move forward to pass national collective bargaining, keep firefighters on the job through SAFER grants, strengthen laws that protect us at work, assure your union rights, and protect your retirement future.”

The firefighters’ union boasts more than 300,000 members, according to the Wall Street Journal, and frequently endorses Democratic presidential candidates.

It marks the first endorsement of a 2020 Democratic candidate by a major national labor union, as the party seeks to defeat President Trump next year. Unions remain a potent force in Democratic politics.

Mr. Biden was expected to be joined by members of the IAFF and other labor union members at his first campaign event Monday afternoon at a Pittsburgh union hall.

The Pittsburgh rally will be Biden’s first campaign-style event since entering the race on Thursday. Biden made a retail stop at a Delaware pizzeria on Thursday and briefly spoke to reporters. On Friday, he appeared on ABC’s “The View” and faced tough questions about accusations of inappropriate touching and his handling of the 1991 Supreme Court confirmation testimony of Anita Hill.
