FLASHBACK: Al Franken Joked About Raping CBS’s Lesley Stahl

Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) is accused of sexually assaulting Los Angeles-based radio host Leeann Tweeden while practicing a skit before a USO Tour performance in December 2006. But this isn’t the first time the former SNL cast member has been involved in a controversial skit that objectified a female.

In a 1995 New York Magazine profile of Saturday Night Live, Franken brought up a skit in which his character would rape CBS News reporter Lesley Stahl.

“And, ‘I give the pills to Lesley Stahl. Then, when Lesley’s passed out, I take her to the closet and rape her.’ Or, ‘That’s why you never see Lesley until February.’ Or, ‘When she passes out, I put her in various positions and take pictures of her,'” Franken said.

Franken’s rape joke hobbled his 2008 Senate campaign, but recently said the controversy has now grown irrelevant, and he would be happy to compare his conduct to President Trump’s “Access Hollywood” tape.
