FLASHBACK: Trump Considered Oprah as Presidential Running Mate in 1999

Critics and pundits alike are praising Oprah Winfrey following her speech at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, with some even calling for the former TV host to run for president in 2020.

If Oprah does decide to run for president in 2020, she would, of course, be running against President Donald Trump, who during a 1999 interview said he would consider Oprah as a candidate for vice president.

Trump, who was announcing his plans to form a presidential exploratory committee on CNN’s “Larry King Live,” said that Oprah would be his first choice to be his running mate.

King asked Trump if he had a vice presidential candidate in mind.

“Oprah. I love Oprah. Oprah would always be my first choice,” Trump said.

King seemed somewhat taken aback by Trump’s answer.

“You know what? I tell you, she’s really a great woman, though. She is a terrific woman. She is somebody that is very special,” Trump explained. “I have not even thought about it. I guess we’ll see, we’ll see. Maybe that’s part of the whole process.”

King asked Trump, kidding aside, if Oprah would really be someone that Trump would consider to be a vice presidential candidate.

“If she’d do it, she’d be fantastic. I mean, she’s popular, she’s brilliant, she’s a wonderful woman. I mean, if she would ever do it. I don’t know that she would ever do it,” Trump said.

“What a ticket that would be,” King remarked on the possibility of a Trump/Oprah presidential ticket.

“That would be a pretty good ticket,” Trump agreed. “But she’s a very exceptional woman.”

Trump has not yet weighed in on Oprah’s buzzed-about Golden Globes speech or the presidential speculation that followed.
