A number of MSNBC contributors claimed Friday that former FBI Director James Comey’s new book could actually hurt Comey’s case and strengthen the president’s.

Thomas Dupree, a former Deputy Assistant Attorney General under George W. Bush, told MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson that the book indicates the president is not in legal jeopardy.

“The interesting thing about the allegations in Comey’s book is that his attacks on the president are largely personal and ethical as opposed to legal,” Dupree said.

In the book, Comey claimed that Trump’s actions “may fall short of being illegal.”

“Jim Comey is a guy who knows obstruction of justice when he sees it,” Dupree explained. “The fact that Comey himself wasn’t willing to say that in his view, Trump crossed the line, is significant.”

Other panelists predicted that inconsistencies in the Comey book would open the former FBI director to legitimate attacks from Republicans.
