Former Rep. Elizabeth Holtzman (D-NY), a member of the House Judiciary Committee during the Watergate hearings, told MSNBC’s Ali Velshi on Thursday that a subpoena from Special Counsel Robert Mueller of President Trump could trigger a “constitutional crisis.”

“If the president doesn’t want to sit down in a voluntary way, Mueller can get a grand jury subpoena, which requires the president to sit down,” Holtzman said. The former congresswoman envisioned a scenario where Trump would refuse to comply with the subpoena.

“Then we get into, is he above the law?” she asked. “And at that point, we could have a constitutional crisis.”

Holtzman told Velshi that in order for federal courts to enforce the subpoena, they would have to imprison Trump for contempt.

“We’re getting very close to a very bad situation,” she warned.
