Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) 2016 presidential campaign illegally accepted foreign donations from the Australian Labor Party, according to an investigation conducted by the Federal Election Commission.

Bloomberg reports:

“The Australians were paid a total $24,422 for airfare and stipends received while they worked for the Sanders campaign during the New Hampshire presidential primary, according to the FEC. Those payments counted as a foreign contribution prohibited by U.S. law.”

The Sanders campaign argued that it did not do anything wrong by accepting help from the Australian Labor Party, “because of an exemption for volunteer services provided by foreigners.”

However, the Sanders campaign decided to settle with the FEC and is required to pay a $14,500 fine because it wanted to “avoid the expense of litigation, without admitting liability.”
