Former NFL QB Brett Favre Endorses in Mississippi Senate Race

Just as he did for Sen. Thad Cochran in 2014, Favre is working with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to back his preferred candidate in the GOP primary.

Brett Favre is back, but instead of slinging the pigskin, he’s offering up political endorsements. The latest beneficiary is Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), the interim senator currently representing Mississippi in the U.S. Senate and running for a term in her own right this fall.

“I don’t like to talk politics,” Favre says in the ad. “But I love Mississippi way too much to stay quiet in this election. It matters a whole lot to the future of our state. That’s why I’m backing Cindy Hyde-Smith … She’s got my vote.”

Hyde-Smith is locked in a primary battle with former controversial radio show host Chris McDaniel. Interestingly, the last time Favre worked with the U.S. Chamber for an ad was in 2014 when then-Sen. Thad Cochran, whom Hyde-Smith replaced, was facing a primary challenge from McDaniel. Cochran ultimately defeated McDaniel in a runoff election and went on to win the general election with ease.

An April poll showed Hyde-Smith in a tight race with Rep. Mike Espy (D-MS). McDaniel was in a distant third in that poll.

The Mississippi primary will be held on Election Day, November 6, and if no candidate earns 50 percent, a runoff will take place later that month.
