Freedom Foundation Hits Back After Union Attacks

"With all the slander the labor unions so freely sling in their letter, I found it interesting they fail to mention what they are really concerned about."

Freedom Foundation Hits Back After Union Attacks

Susan McCabe, the wife of the Freedom Foundation CEO Tom McCabe, emailed more than 200,000 teachers and state workers in Washington after the Northwest Accountability Project mailed a letter attacking Tom McCabe and the Freedom Foundation.

“This is an important letter about one of your neighbors, Tom McCabe, who is the CEO for an extremist anti-worker group based in Olympia,” the Northwest Accountability Project wrote. “The Freedom Foundation poses as a non-partisan think tank, but in reality, they are members of a national network of ultra-conservative millionaires and billionaires including the Koch brothers. They support policies that strip environmental laws and eliminate taxes on the wealthy… anything in the way of their benefactors’ profit margins.”

Susan McCabe responded to this attack on her husband by sending an email to more than 200,000 teachers and state workers in Washington asking them if they were okay with their union dues being used to “bully and intimidate” individuals.

“I don’t know about you, but after reading the above letter, I concluded there must no longer be any rational argument for joining a labor union. Otherwise, unions would be out making those arguments instead of sending my neighbors anonymous letters designed to bully and intimidate,” Susan McCabe wrote.

In the letter, Susan McCabe also revealed that “the exact same letter went to the neighbors of another Freedom Foundation employee and to the neighbors of the Freedom Foundation’s board of directors.”

“With all the slander the labor unions so freely sling in their letter, I found it interesting they fail to mention what they are really concerned about—the fact that the Freedom Foundation is helping workers opt out of unions,” Susan McCabe wrote. “Since 2014, with very rare exceptions, that’s all the Freedom Foundation does. The group explains workers’ rights, helps workers who want to leave and legally defends them if necessary.”

Susan McCabe then accused the union of bullying its own members by “aggressively laying down the law about what you should think and feel.”

“Your union is a bully. You may disagree with me, I may have gone on too long, but I am about to do something that your union leaders don’t have the courage to do—sign my name to a letter that comes from my heart,” Susan McCabe concluded.
