Mark Kelly, the former astronaut and husband to former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ), announced Tuesday that he is running for the Democratic nomination for Senate in Arizona in 2020. Kelly, a vocal gun control advocate, released a four-plus minute announcement video to break the news.

The video did not mention gun control or President Donald Trump but instead focused on climate change and access to health care.

It’s not yet clear if Kelly will face any other Democrats in the state’s primary contest. Last week, John McCain’s former chief of staff Grant Woods announced that he would not run for Senate. Woods previously served as Arizona’s attorney general as a Republican but had spoken to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) about running for Senate as a Democrat.

But one Democrat who may still announce he’s running, Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), put out a statement on Twitter Tuesday morning, seemingly in response to Kelly’s news, that he is still mulling a run:

Regardless of who Arizona Democrats nominate, they will likely face Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ), who was appointed by Gov. Doug Ducey to fill the vacancy left by McCain. McSally ran for Senate in her own right in 2018 but lost in a close race to now-Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ).

President Trump won the state in 2016 by about four percentage points over Hillary Clinton, and Arizona is sure to be a fierce battleground in 2020 up and down the ticket.
