Gallup: Record-High 56% Approve of Trump’s Handling of Economy

President Donald Trump received some good news Tuesday in the way of a new national poll. According to Gallup, 56 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, a three-point jump from his previous high of 53 percent in November 2018.

Trump’s handling of the economy has long been viewed as a strength by American voters, never falling below 45 percent in any Gallup poll. The firm has been asking Americans for their views on the president’s handling of the economy since the Reagan era, and the average rating for the economy is 43 percent approval.

Trump is aided by a strong job market and an unemployment rate that has remained at or below 4 percent dating back to April 2018. The unemployment rate has not risen above 4.1 percent since September of 2017, Trump’s first year in office. The unemployment rate has been steadily declining since the 2009 economic crisis.

But it’s not just the economy where Trump received high marks. Americans approve of his handling of the situation in North Korea as well, with 51 percent approving and 45 disapproving.

Overall, Trump’s approval rating is 43 percent, with 54 percent who disapprove. That’s a one-point drop from his February numbers, but a big boost from his December and January ratings, which showed the president at 37 percent approval. The partial government shutdown occurred during both months, potentially contributing to the lower ratings.

The Gallup poll was conducted from Feb. 12-28.
