Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) awkwardly announced that she is forming a presidential exploratory committee during an interview with Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show” Tuesday night.

Colbert pointed out to Gillibrand at the start of the interview that she was on the show in December, before asking her if she had anything she would like to announce.

“Yes,” Gillibrand said before awkwardly holding Colbert’s hands and looking into his eyes.

“And what would that be madam?” Colbert asked.

“I’m filing an exploratory committee for president of the United States tonight,” Gillibrand said.

The audience in attendance for the taping of “The Late Show” then erupted into applause.

Colbert followed up by asking Gillibrand why she wanted to run for president.

“I’m going to run for president of the United States because as a young mom, I will fight for your children, as my own health care should be a right, not a privilege,” Gillibrand said before listing off several other progressive talking points.

Most presidential candidates announce their intentions to run for office at a campaign event that features the very Americans they hope to represent in the White House.

If Gillibrand’s selection of “The Late Show” is any indication of who she hopes to represent, then Americans could very well expect Gillibrand to be a candidate that will speak to the coastal elite in America.
