Gillibrand Awkwardly Dodges Impeachment Question

"It's not about winning and losing. It's about our democracy. It's about our country."

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), a possible 2020 presidential candidate, dodged on whether she thought the new Congress should impeach President Trump during an interview with ABC’s “The View” on Monday.

Co-host Abby Huntsman asked Gillibrand whether she supported impeaching Trump, citing exit polls from the 2018 midterm elections that showed 77 percent of Democrats wanted Trump impeached.

“Well, we certainly need oversight and accountability. The Republican Congress refused to hold President Trump accountable on any of the issues that you mentioned,” Gillibrand said.

Gillibrand then rattled off several controversies that the Trump administration finds itself embroiled in at the moment, adding, “You’ve never seen, in my opinion, an administration that has more corrupt than this one.”

Huntsman pressed Gillibrand, asking whether that is a winning issue for Democrats.

“It’s not about winning and losing. It’s about our democracy. It’s about our country,” Gillibrand retorted.

“The View’s” Joy Behar interjected that impeachment would not work because it requires two-thirds of the Senate.

“We need oversight and accountability,” Gillibrand said.

Behar followed up by asking Gillibrand how impeachment would work.

“It’s a duty of the House of Representatives, if the president has been implicated in a crime,” Gillibrand explained.

Gillibrand then called for Congress to pass a law to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation without ever addressing Huntsman’s question about impeachment.
