Gillibrand Ends Exploratory Phase, Officially Launches 2020 Bid

Languishing in the early polls and struggling to connect with Democratic primary voters, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) officially ended her exploratory committee on Sunday and formally launched her presidential campaign.

The move earned Gillibrand her first congressional endorsement, namely from fellow New Yorker, Carolyn Maloney:

Gillibrand, who announced her exploratory committee to run for president back in January, did not have a single congressional endorsement until Sunday.

A recent Iowa poll showed Gillibrand tied with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is not running for president, at zero percent among Iowa Democratic caucusgoers. Nationally, her outlook is no less grim. A poll of national Democrats released last week by Morning Consult showed Gillibrand at 1 percent. Another national poll, this one conducted by Monmouth, showed Gillibrand at 0 percent.

Still, Gillibrand is putting on a brave face and jumping in with both feet. She plans to deliver a speech in front of the Trump International hotel in New York City on Sunday. She will also take part in a town hall event in Michigan that will be nationally televised by MSNBC.

Gillibrand came under scrutiny last week for her handling of allegations of sexual harassment in her Senate office last year. A female employee told Politico that she reported a male office superior for inappropriate conduct. According to the aide, the superior then retaliated against her and was not reprimanded. She quit shortly thereafter.

Gillibrand’s name is closely associated with the #MeToo movement, namely for her decision to call on Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) to resign after allegations of sexual misconduct involving the former comedian surfaced. Gillibrand’s decision to involve herself in that situation upset many Democrats at the time and some are still fuming.
