GOP-Aligned Senate Group Announces First Wave of ’18 Investments in 3 States

Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), a super PAC allied with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has picked its first three states to invest in for the fall midterms: Missouri, Nevada, and North Dakota.

The Washington Examiner‘s David Drucker reported:

Senate Leadership Fund was set to invest $10.5 million in Missouri, where presumptive Republican nominee, state Attorney General Josh Hawley, is challenging vulnerable Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. The group also was targeting Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota with a $2.3 million purchase; she faces a stiff challenge from Rep. Kevin Cramer, a Republican.

…Nevada, where Senate Leadership Fund plans to spend $11.2 million, is among the Republican Party’s few defensive positions on the map. Rep. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., is threatening Republican Sen. Dean Heller, who is running for a second full term in a diverse state that Trump lost narrowly to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016.

The gap between spending in Missouri and Nevada ($10.5 million and $11.2 million, respectively) and North Dakota ($2.3 million) can partially be explained by the cost of advertising in certain markets (St. Louis and Las Vegas, for example) over others (Bismarck).

But it’s also an early indicator of McConnell’s priorities in maintaining, and possibly expanding, his Senate majority. He clearly sees McCaskill’s seat as a top priority, and his allies appear all in on defending Heller, perhaps the most vulnerable Republican incumbent in the nation this year.

SLF has not yet made announcements on reservations hitting other vulnerable Democrats, like red-state Sens. Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Joe Manchin (D-WV), and Jon Tester (D-MT). But there’s plenty of time, and SLF will surely have other investment announcements in the future.
