GOP Introduces Legislation to Prevent Family Separation, Enforce Immigration Laws

Democrats pledged to oppose any effort to fix the situation, however, leaving the legislative push in doubt.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) announced Wednesday that Congress would vote on a proposal Thursday to simultaneously end family separation and enforce America’s immigration laws.

“We do not want children taken away from their parents,” Ryan said. “We can enforce immigration laws without breaking families apart.”

President Trump asked Congress to act on immigration legislation, a request Ryan will fill.

“Tomorrow, the House will vote on legislation to keep families together. Under this bill, when people are being prosecuted for illegally crossing the border, families will remain together under DHS proceedings throughout their legal proceedings,” Ryan told reporters.

The speaker also said that Congress would make additional funds available to comfortably house the families.

“We are going to take action to keep families together while we enforce our immigration laws,” he added.

Democrats put any legislative effort in doubt, however, when Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced Tuesday that Democrats would oppose all legislative fixes to the family separation crisis. Will moderate Democrats in the Senate buck their leader?
