GOP Rep. Rips Democrats for Denying a Border Crisis Existed

Rep. Jim Jordan took Democrats to task for denying there was ever a crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

During a hearing at the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Friday, Rep. Jim Jordan laid into Democrats for suddenly changing their tune about the crisis at the U.S. southern border.

“What we’re going to hear from Democrats this morning is astonishing,” Jordan began. “For months they declared there wasn’t even a crisis on the border. Senator [Mark] Warner said, ‘A fake crisis at the border is fearmongering of the worst kind, and we’re not falling for it.’”

“But weeks later, Democrats sure have changed their tune,” Jordan pointed out. He added that the chairman of the committee, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), recently said Congress cannot ignore the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“For years now, Republicans have been warning about the crisis and working hard to find solutions, and all the while, Democrats have denied there was even a problem,” he said. “This is not about politics, it’s always been about preserving the integrity of our border and preventing the humanitarian crisis we are all now witnessing.”

Polls show Jordan is correct. An April survey conducted by ABC News/Washington Post found that 45 percent of Americans say that the number of illegal border crossings along the United States southern border is “a serious problem,” while 35 percent say it has become a “crisis.”

In that poll, only 18 percent of Americans said the illegal border crossings were not a serious problem.
