Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) pushed back on President Trump’s proposal to institute the death penalty for criminals convicted of drug trafficking on CNN on Sunday.

At a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, Trump cited the example of China, saying they had low drug rates because they killed drug dealers. “I don’t know that the United States is ready for it,” he commented.

“We should probably not be following China’s lead,” Johnson told CNN’s Jim Acosta.

“I’m a supporter of the death penalty but only when it’s in those types of instances that we are 100 percent certain that the person is 100 percent guilty,” he said. “I’m not sure it would be applicable to drug offenses.”
