President Trump renewed his ongoing feud with the late Sen. John McCain over the weekend with a series of tweets that criticized the military hero and prisoner of war for votes he took in the Senate and his academic success as the U.S. Naval Academy, among other things.

McCain died in August from a glioblastoma brain tumor.

Unsurprisingly, longtime friend Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) defended McCain with a tweet on Sunday:

Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson, a Republican, also went out of his way to praise McCain and his service to his country.

“I want to elevate John. John was better than I am, and I know it. John was the best of my generation,” Isakson told The Bulwark. “John McCain was and is a great human being.”

But Isakson didn’t stop there. He took direct aim at Trump for continuing to denigrate McCain, a war hero, while serving as commander-in-chief:

America deserves better, the people deserve better, and nobody—regardless of their position—is above common decency and respect for people that risk their life for your life. When the president is saying that that he doesn’t respect John McCain and he’s never going to respect John McCain and all these kids are out there listening to the president of the United States talk that way about the most decorated senator in history who is dead it just sets the worst tone possible.

Isakson is rarely involved in political skirmishes, making his decision to speak out on this topic all the more poignant.
