Gowdy Destroys Comey Over Clinton, Trump Investigations

The House Oversight chairman pointed out that Comey did everything in his power to obtain a special counsel for the Trump investigation, but nothing of the sort for the Clinton investigation.

House Oversight Chairman Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) ripped former FBI Director James Comey at a Congressional hearing on Tuesday, criticizing his covert actions to spur the appointment of a special counsel to investigate the Trump campaign.

Gowdy, who directed the congressional investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server, referenced Comey’s probe into Clinton and the double standard between his treatment of the two matters.

“Clearly Jim Comey had lost confidence in the [Department of Justice] to handle the case in a way worthy of public trust,” he said. “But that leads us to the one thing we did not see Jim Comey do, which was to take any steps to spur a special counsel in the Hillary Clinton investigation.”

This, Gowdy said, ran in direct contrast to his actions surrounding the Trump investigation. “When he lost confidence in the Trump Justice Department, he memorialized conversations, he leaked them, and he admitted he did so to spur the appointment of special counsel because he didn’t trust the career prosecutors at the Department of Justice,” the representative began.

“When he lost confidence in the Obama Justice Department, he didn’t make special memos, he didn’t share them with his law professor friends, he didn’t leak the information, he didn’t lift a finger to get a special prosecutor,” Gowdy said. “Instead he appointed himself FBI director, attorney general, special counsel, lead investigator, and the general arbiter of what is good and right in the world, according to him.”
