Group Tied to Muslim Brotherhood Sends Email Supporting Ilhan Omar

The Muslim American Society (MAS), which was founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood, sent out an email to supporters on Tuesday asking its members to support Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).

The Jewish Voice tweeted a screenshot of the email:

MAS, which is based in Falls Church, Virginia, “openly acknowledges its ties to the Muslim Brotherhood in a statement on its website,” according to NPR.

The Chicago Tribune reported on MAS’s ties to the Muslim Brotherhood in 2004:

“Shaker Elsayed, a top MAS official, says the organization was founded by Brotherhood members but has evolved to include Muslims from various backgrounds and ideologies.”

The Chicago Tribune also reported on an internal MAS memo, which instructed leaders to say that “they are an independent group called the Muslim American Society,” if they were asked about Muslim Brotherhood ties.

“It is a self-explanatory name that does not need further explanation,” the memo reportedly said.

President Trump has considered classifying the Muslim Brotherhood “as a foreign terrorist organization,” something that experts supported during a congressional hearing on the matter in 2018.

This email from MAS comes as Omar finds herself yet again embroiled in controversy for anti-Semitic comments.
