Haley: Mideast Peace Plan Coming

Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told the University of Chicago’s David Axelrod at a Thursday event that Trump administration officials are “finishing” a plan for peace in the Middle East.

The Washington Post‘s Anne Gearan reported:

“I think they’re finishing it up,” Haley said during a question-and-answer session at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics.

Haley added that U.S. negotiators Jared Kushner and Jason D. Greenblatt are “still going back and forth,” and she gave no more specific timeline.

“They’re coming up with a plan. It won’t be loved by either side, and it won’t be hated by either side.”

Haley seems to be referring to a proposed peace deal between Israel and Palestine, a foreign policy challenge that has eluded U.S. presidents for decade.

Key issues between the two sides include, but are not limited to, Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the Palestinian desire for a recognized state, and occasional violence between Israel, Palestine, and their respective allies.

Haley, and the Trump administration at large, have been fierce advocates for Israel over the last year-plus. Haley had arguably her biggest moment on the UN stage last year when she cast the lone ‘no’ vote on a resolution demanding President Trump rescind his declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Haley has also been tough on Iran, publicly siding with Iranian protesters during their efforts to speak out against the Iranian regime last year.
