Half of Americans Say Mueller Report Won’t Impact Their Vote

After two years of investigations, media scrutiny, and wild speculation, the American public has largely written off Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into potential Russian collusion with the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.

According to a poll conducted by Morning Consult, 49 percent of Americans said the report’s findings will not impact their presidential vote in 2020. Another 13 percent said they “didn’t know” or had no opinion about the report, while 13 percent said it makes them more likely to vote for Trump and just 24 percent said the report made them less likely to vote for Trump.

Mueller’s report “did not find enough evidence to bring a conspiracy charge against members of the Trump campaign,” but there were specific instances of obstruction of justice raised by the report. Mueller broke his legendary silence last week to explain that charges were not brought against Trump because the Constitution forbids it.

The news about Mueller’s report “hardly broke through with voters,” according to Morning Consult.

Just over a third of voters (35 percent) said they heard “a lot” about Mueller’s public appearance last week, putting it on par with some other events in his investigation, such as the sentencing of former Trump campaign Chairman Paul Manafort and Trump asserting executive privilege over the full report.

Meanwhile, Trump’s approval rating actually improved slightly following the release of the report: 43 percent said they approved of his job performance, while 54 percent said they disapproved. Two weeks prior, the results were 42 approve/56 percent disapprove.
