Asked by Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) about the CIA’s efforts to stop the spread of opioid trafficking, CIA Director-designate Gina Haspel told the Senate Intelligence Committee that she would seek to expand the agency’s anti-drug operation.

President Trump’s nominee to lead the CIA said she was “shocked” by the opioid crisis when she returned from her overseas service.

“We’re losing 115 Americans a day. That seems to me to be an extraordinary crisis for our country,” Haspel said. “CIA does have a fairly modest program to try and stop the flow of drugs from coming across the southern border – heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl.”

“I’ve asked [the team at CIA] to come up with some options to grow that program,” the nominee testified.

She told Lankford that she would expand on her comments in a later classified briefing.
