Heiktamp Is on Her Way to a Likely Loss in November. And Now She’s ‘Ruined’ Lives.

The vulnerable North Dakota senator's failing campaign got even worse this week when a group of women said the senator's botched ad "ruined" some of their lives.

Heiktamp Is on Her Way to a Likely Loss in November. And Now She’s ‘Ruined’ Lives.

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) is down an average of 8.7 percentage points in her U.S. Senate race with Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) and appears headed for a likely defeat in under three weeks. If it’s possible for her campaign to get worse, though, it just did this week, after a group of women said Heitkamp had “downright ruined” their lives.

The controversy stems from a letter Heitkamp used to attack Cramer’s comments about sexual assault. Women who were listed as signatories to the letter, placed as an ad in a newspaper, started coming out after the ad’s release to say they did not authorize their names to appear on the letter.

CNN reported:

The letter featured over 120 names at the bottom, but several women have come forward to say they were either included without their permission or were not survivors of “domestic violence, sexual assault, or rape,” as specified in the letter.

In response, Heitkamp admitted the mistake and said she was “personally apologizing” to each person impacted.

Some of the women said the ad has “interfered with, or downright ruined, our lives,” according to CNN.

Heitkamp had an emotional interview with a North Dakota radio host on Tuesday, in which she apologized to the women.

“All I can say is at the end of the day when I put my head on the pillow I know that I caused hurt…this was incompetent. This was wrong,” Heitkamp said. “This should have never happened.”

Asked if she felt her campaign had any legal liability for naming these women, Heitkamp said she wasn’t sure. “Some people who are lawyers would say the worst thing you can do if you’re worried about lawsuits is admit culpability or negligence and I’m admitting it right here,” she said. “This is a very flagrant error of the campaign and I own it.”

Potential legal consequences would mean Heitkamp’s troubles with the 2018 campaign would likely last beyond a loss this November. It’s a rough way to end an already-troubled run for reelection.
