Heitkamp Calls in the Cavalry to Help Save Her Senate Seat

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) finds herself trailing her Republican opponent Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) by 16 points with less than two weeks to go until Election Day after a campaign gaffe that exposed the identities of dozens of women whom the ad says were victims of sexual assault without their permission.

If Cramer defeats Heitkamp, Senate Democrats can pretty much kiss their chances of regaining control of the Senate in 2018 goodbye.

So with her back against the wall, what is Heitkamp doing? She called in the Democratic cavalry to her assistance.

While other Democratic candidates have gotten the assistance of heavy hitters like former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, and a slew of 2020 hopefuls, Heitkamp’s cavalry comes in the form of former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, a highly polarizing figure in American politics.

Hagel campaigned across North Dakota with Heitkamp on Tuesday and Wednesday in an increasingly desperate effort to revitalize her sinking campaign.

For those unfamiliar with Hagel, he is a former Republican senator from Nebraska and was nominated by former President Barack Obama to serve as Secretary of Defense in 2013.

Hagel also has the dubious honor of being the only Secretary of Defense nominee in United States history to be filibustered by the Senate but was eventually confirmed by Senate Democrats.

But when down 16 points in the polls like Heitkamp, it’s difficult to be picky about who comes to your aid.
