Heller Avoids Primary, as Trump Convinces Tarkanian to Drop Senate Race for House

In a last-minute surprise that shook up Nevada’s U.S. Senate race, and may shake up the overall fight for control of the U.S. Senate, President Trump on Friday convinced Sen. Dean Heller’s (R-NV) primary challenger, Danny Tarkanian, to drop his primary fight and run for U.S. House instead.

Trump tweeted that it “would be great” for the GOP “if good guy Danny Tarkanian would run for Congress” instead of Senate.

Amy Tarkanian, a former Nevada Republican Party chair and Danny’s wife, scooped the candidate by confirming Danny would run for U.S. House.

And Danny confirmed the news minutes later:

Subsequent reporting suggested Danny Tarkanian needed to hear directly from Trump that the president’s preference was for Danny to run for House, which precipitated the Trump tweet, just hours before a filing deadline in Nevada.

Tarkanian’s decision helps the Republican Party avoid a messy and expensive three-month primary. Tarkanian was also seen by some in the party as less electable than Heller in November.

The end result may be a better chance for Republicans to keep the U.S. Senate seat in Nevada, which will also make it easier for the GOP to keep, or even expand, its majority in 2018.
