Here Are the Four Votes the Senate is Likely to Take on Immigration Today

Trump’s immigration proposal. Sanctuary cities. A bipartisan compromise. A ‘mini’ bipartisan compromise.

These are the four proposals expected to receive votes in the U.S. Senate on Thursday, according to reporting from the Washington Examiner. The Examiner said Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) “set up votes as early as Thursday.” Each needs 60 votes to pass, meaning any proposal that is successful will have both Republican and Democratic votes behind it.

Here are the four:

  • A proposal from Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) that largely mirrors President Trump’s ‘four pillars‘ immigration deal – a path to citizenship for up to 1.8 million undocumented immigrants, in exchange for border wall funding and changes to legal immigration
  • A proposal from Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) that would punish so-called “sanctuary cities,” which started the current impasse between Republicans and Democrats over immigration
  • A proposal from Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) backed by the bipartisan “Common Sense Caucus” in the Senate; the deal would offer the same path to citizenship as Trump’s proposal in exchange for $25 billion in border wall funding
  • A smaller compromise than above, backed by Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Chris Coons (D-DE), that would offer protections for so-called Dreamers in exchange for “increase[d] security along the U.S.-Mexico border”; the White House has rejected this compromise

Whether any of these bills can clear the House and earn the president’s signature, even if one or more clear the Senate, is an open question.
