Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO), who officially launched he presidential campaign on Thursday, would not say whether he considers himself a capitalist, dodging the question multiple times during an interview with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Friday.

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough asked Hickenlooper whether he was concerned about members of the Democratic Party embracing socialism.

“The Democratic Party is a big tent party, and that’s one of the things I’ve always loved about the Democratic Party. There are all kinds of ideas,” Hickenlooper said. “Most Democrats don’t care as much about the labels.”

Scarborough followed up by asking Hickenlooper if he would consider himself a proud capitalist.

“Oh, I don’t know,” Hickenlooper said laughing. “You know, again, the labels – I’m not sure any of them fit.”

Hickenlooper then attempted to dodge the question by talking about climate change. However, Scarborough didn’t let Hickenlooper off the hook, asking him if he would consider himself capitalist.

“Well, again the labels –” Hickenlooper said before talking about his small business.

“Do you consider yourself a capitalist and does capitalism work?” Scarborough pressed Hickenlooper.

“I don’t look at myself with a label,” Hickenlooper said. “I think right now, the way capitalism is working in the United States, it’s not doing what it once did. It’s really not providing security and opportunity for the middle-class and poor people.”
