Hiding Something? Beto to Shun Press on Political Road Trip

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), a possible 2020 presidential candidate, is reportedly “asking aides to create an itinerary for him to take a solo road trip outside of Texas” to meet with Democrats before deciding whether to run for president in 2020.

However, don’t expect to see the wall-to-wall press coverage of O’Rourke’s trip that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), another 2020 hopeful, received when she visited Iowa this past weekend. O’Rourke won’t be accompanied by members of the media, if he can help it.

The Wall Street Journal first reported:

“Former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke is asking aides to create an itinerary for him to take a solo road trip outside of Texas where he would “pop into places” such as community college campuses, as he considers whether to enter the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, according to a person familiar with the plans.”

O’Rourke has become the hot pick among Democratic insiders to win the party’s 2020 nomination. Supporters point to O’Rourke’s record-breaking fundraising numbers, youth, and ability to connect with conservative voters who are dissatisfied with President Trump.

The person familiar with O’Rourke’s plan said that the solo trip would begin in El Paso, but it would keep O’Rourke “away from Iowa and other early-voting states,” per the Wall Street Journal.

O’Rourke’s solo trip will also not include staff or press, “though he may document the trip on social media and allow people he meets to do so as well.”

It’s strange for a possible presidential candidate like O’Rourke to shy away from press coverage. Even Hillary Clinton, who staged campaign stops 2015 by handpicking the individuals who attended her event, welcomed press coverage at those events.

O’Rourke’s move is designed to take the pressure off of these early-days events. But even if O’Rourke wants to shun the press from his events, it’s unlikely to work.
