Hillary Clinton on Friday: ‘I’d Like to Be President’

Could the twice-failed candidate actually be considering a third presidential campaign?

Former Democratic nominee for president Hillary Clinton told Recode’s Kara Swisher on Friday that she would still like to be president, but first said she doesn’t want to run again.

“We’re going to talk about 2020 in a minute, [but] do you want to run again?” Swisher asked Clinton.

“No,” Clinton replied after a beat.

“Wait, there was a pause –” Swisher said.

“Well, I’d like to be president,” Clinton replied said, to some applause in the auditorium.

Clinton then pivoted into a rationale for her remark: the next Democratic president will have a lot of work to do, Clinton argued. And she stated that she is uniquely qualified to do that work.

“There is going to be so much work to be done,” Clinton said. “We have confused our friends and our enemies. They have no idea what the United States stands for, what we’re likely to do, what we think is important. So, the work would be work that I feel very prepared for, having been in the Senate for eight years, having been a diplomat in the State Department, and it’s just going to be a lot of heavy lifting.”

Swisher followed up by asking if Clinton planned to be doing any of the “heavy lifting” she mentioned.

“Oh, I have no idea Kara, but I’m not going to even think about it until we get through this November 6th election about what’s going to happen after that,” Clinton said.
