Holder Warns Trump: Pardons Could Create “Perfect Witness” for Mueller

“It might have a positive impact on the person who received the pardon. But it will not ultimately thwart the Mueller investigation."

Former Attorney General Eric Holder blasted President Trump for his recent string of presidential pardons on Friday, and warned that someone who obtains a presidential pardon from Trump could make for a “perfect witness” in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Holder was speaking at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics’ “Politics & Eggs” breakfast, an event typically attended by politicians with presidential ambitions.

A participant at the event asked Holder what he thinks about Trump’s use of the pardon power.

“I’m a little concerned about what’s going on now, where I think the president is trying to send a message, to some people who potentially might be involved in the Russia investigation,” Holder said.

Holder then questioned the people who Trump has pardoned so far, saying “very few of these people would be considered good candidates for pardons.”

“It’s an absolute power that the president has,” Holder said. “But it’s an interesting thing and I don’t think people have necessarily thought about it this way.”

Holder then explained that if Mueller takes “a pardoned person” and “put that person before a grand jury, that person no longer has the ability to say ‘I’m going to invoke my Fifth Amendment right.’ That’s been stripped away, you have a pardon.”

“That person then becomes a perfect witness for the special counsel,” Holder said. “It might have a positive impact on the person who received the pardon. But it will not ultimately thwart the Mueller investigation.”
