Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen defended the Trump administration’s family separation policy in a speech in New Orleans on Monday.

“There are some who would like us to look the other way when dealing with families at the border, and not enforce the law passed by Congress,” she said. “Past administrations may have done so, but we will not.”

It’s not clear what law Nielsen is citing.

“We do not have the luxury of pretending that all individuals coming to this country as a family unit are in fact, a family,” Nielsen added, raising the possibility that human traffickers are abusing U.S. family laws to smuggle migrants across the border.

The secretary called on all migrants to use normal ports of entry to request asylum, rather than illegally crossing the border.

“If you cross the border illegally, we will prosecute you. If you make a false immigration claim, we will prosecute you. If you smuggle illegal aliens across a extraordinarily dangerous journey, we will prosecute you,” she said.
