Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) requested a delay of the Democrats’ House leadership elections, slated to take place this week, after he was hospitalized Monday.

According to a press release his office put out Tuesday, Maloney was diagnosed with a “persistent bacterial infection” in September. That infection then “spread to a number of his internal organs.” He’s currently hospitalized at New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. He’s “receiving intravenous antibiotic treatments and is expected to return home before the end of the week.”

But it’s bad timing for Maloney, who represents the 18th Congressional District of New York and is running to become chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Votes for the DCCC position, as well as other House leadership races, are expected to take place on Wednesday. If the caucus does not delay the vote, Maloney asked that his name be removed from consideration.

“With deep respect for my supporters and colleagues, I felt it was improper to continue a leadership run at this time, unless the election can be postponed until a later date,” Maloney said in a statement. “I’ll be enthusiastically re-joining my colleagues soon to get to work on the important issues of the day.”

There have been no announcements indicating the caucus would delay the vote as of Tuesday afternoon.
